When Gail Marquardt, vice president of consumer engagement for the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), first transitioned from the world of banking to the world of funeral service nearly ten years ago, little did she know how her new career path would evolve. Little did she know she would acquire a passion for educating consumers about the value of a funeral and the creative ways in which family members and friends can pay tribute to a loved one who has died. 2020 has been the year of surprises. People with basic practical and financial needs are looking for services to prevent further disruption of the lives of their families or for themselves. Holton Street Clinic (HSC) is discreetly tucked away in its neighborhood, and not obvious to most, but it has a huge impact on those who open its purple door. Alicia Green is a Milwaukee County bus driver by day and a kitchen whiz at heart, making amazing food for parties and celebrations, and dreams to someday run her business, Tasteful Events, full-time. The challenge is combining culinary talent with business savvy to take her dream to the next level. A visit to Beard MKE starts with a sandwich board that meets you at the front door. Rachel Callaray had a budding idea a couple decades ago, but it wasn’t until about 7 years ago that she and her two daughters created ‘The Global Vybe’ – a resource for parents, teachers, leaders, and humans in general, to be inspired and learn about what it means to be human. Lori Turner has always been a patron of donation, of contribution. We all make plans and dream big dreams. But for some, the practical and emotional challenges that come with poverty and family circumstance make achieving them more difficult. Operation DREAM provides holistic support and developmental opportunities for boys and young men of color and their families living in low income neighborhoods. #1000hometownheroes, @maskupmke
